Brianna Richardson

1) I am here because:
I needed a St. John’s family. My first year living in St. John’s I had been searching for a yoga studio, having just experienced my first Moksha summer in Charlottetown I was hooked. It took me a while to find Jill Holden, but boy was I happy when I did. After a few of her Moksha-Inspired classes she mentioned she was working on opening a studio of her own. Never have I been so sure of something as when I emailed (harassed) her inquiring about somehow working together. Needless to say it was the best thing I ever did. I found my St. John’s family.
2) 6 Things I can’t live without:
1- My roommate, Michael Walsh. Literally, he is the chef of our house so I would starve if he weren’t there to feed me.
2- My St. John’s family aka my Sangha.
3- My claddagh ring
4- Water
5- My amazing friends
6- My rockin’ (crazy) family
Everything else I could totally live without.
3) My top 3 goals in life are:
1- To catch babies (Become a Midwife; Brianna Richardson BNRN, NP, RM)
2- Travel. Everywhere and anywhere I possibly can.
3- Win 50 Million Dollars.
4) Ask me about:
What I plan to do once I win 50 million dollars.
5) I’m really good at:
Oh god. Umm, drinking wine.
6) Favourite book, movie, and food:
Sadly, it has been a long time since I have read but this has been my favourite book for a while, mainly because it is a great book but also because I haven’t read much since then: The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
all time fav movie- Gidget!!
Favourite food, hmmm. If you would have asked me while I lived in Res, I would have told you Hashbrown Casserole. Which, don’t get me wrong, I love but truthfully it’s clementines. If I had to eat only one thing for the rest of my life, that’s what it would be! In fact, I’m eating one right now.
7) What is your most positive character trait?
This is a difficult question so I asked my roommate and he said “your niceness, your kindness, your gentleness, your positivity, your ray of sunshineness, your bringing-of-happiness, you are a positive force in peoples lives”
I am crying while typing this. Isn’t he so sweet!!
8 ) Describe your best experience in yoga class:
Tonight (Feb. 25th) with Tiff was pretty fantastic but I will have to say it was one class with Jill Willcott beside me. The entire class was awesome, I felt free which lately I have been having some challenges with but at the end in final savasana, I was taking up so much space so Jill and I held hands. Just so everyone knows this chick is one wicked yogini, therefore I had the best savasana since I don’t even know when. Usually during savasana, I’m like “Inhale, Exhale, wish I could get a falafel from Cedar’s tonight. Inhale, Exhale, there are so many dishes to do at home. Inhale, Exhale, stop thinking and just breathe. Inhale, Exhale. Inhale, Exhale. Inhale, Ex…If I only had 50 Million Dollars..”, but during that final resting pose with Jill Willcott, my mind was peaceful.
9) What is your favourite animal, and why?
Elephants. Their four strong legs represent life’s four pillars- the mind, heart, soul and love. The elephant’s thick skin teaches us to stick with it- even through the worst. It’s trunk symbolizes ambition-follow what you want in life, despite all obstacles, go for what you want. The elephant may have a small brain but it has an awesome memory: to forgive but never forget. And the tail…when elephants travel in groups they hold onto each others tail; stay close to your family and friends.
I like dogs too, because they’re cute.
10) What is the most important thing you ever learned in a yoga class?
This question is taking me a long time to answer. Since my time with MYSJ I have learned so much. Most absolutely important thing would have to be to breathe.
After I learned how to breathe I: passed all my courses, ran my first 10km, dominated the go-kart racetrack, became a conference director, basically realized I can do anything I want to do, as long as I just breathe.

Hardiness- I try and look at a stressful (or potentially stressful) situation as a challenge
Describe your best experience in a yoga class:
After tearing my ACL last year I was intimidated to get back in the hot room because I couldn't bend my knee. Jill took the time to show me how to use a block, a strap and alternative poses to take pressure off my knee. The first day I did "hero pose" without a block I almost cried haha
9) What is your favourite animal, and why?
In the domestic context I would have to say birds. My parents have never been big on pets but I convinced them to let me buy a budgie bird when I was 12. I named him Turkey and he stayed in the family for 3 years. He cuddled, flew around the house and said things like "what's for dinner" and "turkey soup". He was wicked!
10) What is the most important thing you ever learned in a yoga class?
In one class Steve said "Regrets are just lessons you haven't learned yet". Yoga has taught me to let go. Everything and everyone has something to teach us and all you can do is grow from them.
